I have had so many people coming to me recently who have been taught how to knit, but not how to construct correctly. Blocking the knitted pieces before sewing together is paramount to the finish of a garment; this is a basic knitting technique. It's been a hectic few months with the studio in daily use. There have been a lot of tutoring projects, some completely finished, and new projects being started each week.
I have started on a new piece of creative artwork, which explores lacemaking in Brackley during the 1800s. I combine my love for social history into my artwork, and the research I have done in this subject has been somewhat glamourised in modern times. I am also working on a community project to start in September 2025, which will hopefully bring all artists and crafters together. It is free to participate, and more information will follow... I have a few spaces left for one-on-one tutoring, and there is plenty for children & young people to do during the half term. All photographs used in my posts and on my website are either mine or the work of my students from the tutoring project. It is lovely to see a finished project; here is the finish on the sleeves using a 1990s pattern. Onto the next project... ©Joanna Cox Marshall
Why alter a commercial pattern when you can make your own sewing pattern to fit your body measurements... ©Joanna Cox Marshall
It's so lovely to sit down and just stitch. I find it one of the most relaxing subjects to teach. Here is some beautiful hand embroidery. ©Joanna Cox Marshall
It's lovely to see a project being finished, with the length of the dress being chosen, and the hem being stitched by hand. I look forward to seeing some new projects being sewn at home... ©Joanna Cox Marshall
Hand-stitch, creative stitch, or embroidery - it has many names. Here is my piece of stitching using basic stitches, but in the same colour to see the difference between the stitches and their texture.
Sun printing which produced gorgeous results yesterday. I have lots of pressed flowers, so using these helped define the shapes. All photographs used in my posts and on my website are either mine or my students' work. ©Joanna Cox Marshall
It may not be for everyone, but hand stitching a button hole can be very relaxing. A fantastic first go by one of my students. ©Joanna Cox Marshall
Hand-dyed fabric in onion skins. I love any sort of hand-dyeing, it is far more satisfying over other forms of dyeing fabric.
This is the process for developing a design before stitching a piece of textiles, when an idea pops into your head. You need inspiration, then a drawing, to identify motifs and elements that pop out at you. Then proceed onto the fabric and shape, use paper, and stitch to experiment before moving onto fabric development. ©Joanna Cox Marshall
This lovely bag was sewn using fat quarters, perfect for beginners. It's an excellent first project that helps with understanding sewing patterns & basic sewing machine skills. ©Joanna Cox Marshall
A 1980s square neck blouse, beautifully top-stitched and pressed. The basting stitches have not been taken out yet.

My new knitting pattern is now available. This is my little Bluebell Flower Doll. The pattern is suitable for beginners and quick to knit up. For 2025, I am creating a flower doll collection; this is the doll for March. This collection is proving to be very popular, and I know many people are busy knitting my dolls up ready for sale in craft fairs.
https://edithgracedesigns.etsy.com/listing/1887142240 It is important to continue to design and establish myself as a textile artist, as this knowledge is then passed on as a tutor. |
