Medieval monks lived in monasteries and followed a strict disciplined routine. Those who chose the monastic life had to renounce their worldly goods & way of life to spend their daily lives worshipping, reading & performing manual labour. 

Jobs included: 
- Washing & cooking for the monastery
- Farming & growing food
- Making wine, ale & honey
- Providing medical care for the wider community 
- Educating boys & novices
- Copying manuscripts
- Welcoming & providing hospitality to pilgrims

Since a teenager, I have been an avid fan of the Brother Cadfael books by the author Ellis Peters, so designing a monk has been on my list for quite a while. This doll is 14cm tall, knitted in double knitting wool & worked flat. There are many different monk outfits, but I have decided to leave off the hood on this design to show the classic medieval monk hairstyle. The pattern is easy, and suitable for beginners.

In this design, I wanted two dolls that were suitable for beginners and quick to knit. I have used a pattern from the Lapland national dress for Mrs Claus and a Nordic look for Santa Claus.

This is an easy knitting pattern that is perfect for beginners. This little doll is 14cm tall and is a Remembrance Day doll. She holds a bouquet of poppies wearing a green dress, which depicts the stem and leaves of this flower.

On the 5th of November in 1605, Guy Fawkes & his fellow Catholic plotters attempted 'The Gunpowder Plot'. This involved blowing up the Houses of Parliament & assassinating King James I of England. The men were caught in the act and were subsequently imprisoned in the Tower of London. 

Every 5th of November, we hold parties with fireworks & bonfires because of the failed plot. Until 1959, it was illegal to not celebrate 'Bonfire Night' in Britain.  

This doll is only 16cm tall & very easy to knit. It would be perfect for a bonfire night party or as a gift for a history lover.
