Hand-dyed fabric in onion skins. I love any sort of hand-dyeing, it is far more satisfying over other forms of dyeing fabric.

This is the process for developing a design before stitching a piece of textiles, when an idea pops into your head. You need inspiration, then a drawing, to identify motifs and elements that pop out at you. Then proceed onto the fabric and shape, use paper, and stitch to experiment before moving onto fabric development. ©Joanna Cox Marshall
This lovely bag was sewn using fat quarters, perfect for beginners. It's an excellent first project that helps with understanding sewing patterns & basic sewing machine skills. ©Joanna Cox Marshall

My new knitting pattern is now available. This is my little Bluebell Flower Doll. The pattern is suitable for beginners and quick to knit up. For 2025, I am creating a flower doll collection; this is the doll for March. This collection is proving to be very popular, and I know many people are busy knitting my dolls up ready for sale in craft fairs.
https://edithgracedesigns.etsy.com/listing/1887142240 It is important to continue to design and establish myself as a textile artist, as this knowledge is then passed on as a tutor. It is important for students to learn the basics of design before making their project, which can include machine & hand embroidery with appliqué. A rushed, drawn sketch is not design development. Development starts with a subject, drawings, and sketches of motifs within this subject. The process can be as short as 20 minutes, but it helps identify texture, pattern, shape, and shading, and gives you the creative tool to produce a piece of artwork you can proudly display and share with others. ©Joanna Cox Marshall
Tutoring Project: Creative Stitch
Saturday was all about creative stitch. Hand-stitch, creative stitch, or embroidery - it has many names. At the weekend, we explored contemporary art and learnt basic embroidery stitches, using a monotone palette with different thread thicknesses to create space and layers, and experimenting with texture and pattern. Tutoring Project: Basic Sewing Machine Skills/ Drafting a Pattern
Here is a finished project that combines basic sewing machine skills & drafting a pattern to line these two metal baskets. Scrap fabric and ribbons were used to rejuvenate these baskets. All photographs used in my posts and on my website are either mine or the work of my students. Tutoring Project: Creative Stitch It has been an incredibly busy week; the studio has been non-stop. Dressmaking, knitting, creative stitch, basic sewing machine skills, and sketch & stitch. Next week is just as busy... I will endeavour to post some photographs throughout the week. ©Joanna Cox Marshall
